MetaMask provides wallet interfaces through which applications request account access, signatures and transactions. Connecting an account, signing a message and approving a transaction are different actions.

The investigation question

Was this an approval, a transfer or a message?

Start from the submitted transaction hash when one exists. Compare input, target contract and receipt. A message signature may not produce an on-chain record until somebody uses it.

What this guide does not establish

Forensia cannot see private messages, browser compromise or every off-chain signature from an address lookup.
